Thus the Longman Grammar distinguishes circumstance adverbials from stance adverbials and linking adverbials (Biber et al. 1999: 762–892): – “Circumstance adverbials” add circumstantial information about the proposition in the clause, or add information about the circumstances of an activity or state described in the clause. – “Stance adverbials” express the speaker’s/writer’s stance towards the clause, and either give the speaker’s comment on the proposition of the clause or convey the speakers’ comments on what they are saying (the content of the message) or how they are saying it (the style).
