To be silent and invisible is to be the father of jealousy, like the father of ‘Infant Sorrow’ or ‘Starry Jealousy’, the ‘Selfish father of men / Cruel jealous selfish fear’ of ‘Earth’s Answer’ (E. 18, K. 211). If ‘my Rose turn’d away with jealousy’ 36 Blake’s Night Thoughts she has learned it from this Father, and from the subject of that poem who displays it in desiring to ‘tend’ the rose tree in the silent of the night (time, and mode, of possessiveness, but at the moment when possession disappears).

In that sense the poem notes the lack of night, without which its imprisonment is more felt; indeed the poem may be satirical about the day. If it moves between the sunflower and the youth and the virgin, none of them quite at the centre, one more point of reference is implied: the poem has a speaker, apparent in the possessive ‘my’, and that possessiveness is another form of ‘rooting’ the sunflower. The words ‘Ah! Sun-flower’ are the slightly sentimental tones of a subject who appropriates the ‘flower’ and suggests another reason why the flower cannot move away from the point where it/she is fixed.

Sun-flower’, the poem succeeding ‘My Pretty Rose Tree’ in Songs of Experience (perhaps, then, we may hear alongside this, ‘Never seek to tell thy love’, its successor in the Notebook): Ah, Sun-flower! weary of time, Who countest the steps of the Sun: Seeking after that sweet golden clime Where the travellers journey is done. Where the Youth pined away with desire, And the pale Virgin shrouded in snow: Arise from their graves and aspire, Where my Sun-flower wishes to go. (E. 25, K. 215) Ophelia sings in her madness, of whoever she laments, ‘White his shroud as morning snow’.
