Nevertheless, despite these arguments, the essential point still remains that to some extent sources of stress are always personal and idiosyncratic, as are the coping strategies that people use to cope with them (Lazarus 1991). To ignore the role and importance of appraisals is to ignore what are, potentially, the most significant explanatory variables in understanding the coping process. Work stress and coping researchers acknowledge the importance of the transactional model and note not only that it is ideally positioned to offer a more dynamic view of work stress (Harris 1999) but also that examining appraisals is essential if we are to better understand the richness of the stress process (Perrewé & Zellars 1999).

Reviewers have also pointed to the idea of anticipatory coping, which occurs before the onset of a stressful encounter, and argue that by excluding these types of actions Coping: The Measurement Debate 31 when defining coping we somewhat misrepresent the nature of the stress and coping process (Coyne & Gottlieb 1996). None of these issues that surround the definition of coping is mutually exclusive and all relate to the issue of consciousness and coping. Ambiguity surrounds the term ‘consciousness’.

Yet despite this volume of research and the tremendous energy and attention given to the coping process (Burke 2002), there is a sense that much of this research has not produced substantive results (Coyne & Racioppo 2000) and that in many ways our expectations may have been set too high (Burke 2002). While researchers may now have to temper their views as to what has and can be achieved, there is still a sense that despite some difficult methodological issues the field encompasses an increasing number of creative, capable and vigorous researchers who are committed to investigating the structure of coping (Lazarus 2000).
